Thanks to Mother Kelly Jennings:
First Atrium Date: Sunday, August 27, 2017
Atrium Time: 9:15am-11:15 AM Sunday mornings
It takes time for a child’s body, mind and spirit to settle. The more time a child has in the atrium, the deeper his/her experience can be in prayer and work. Around 11:15am, we bring the children in together to the Eucharist, at the time of the Peace.
Ages 3 - 6: Level I, St. Alfred’s Room
Tim is a Level I CGS Catechist and has worked as an assisting and lead catechist in Atria at St. David’s and ECR throughout the last five years. Tim has a Master’s Degree in Engineering and owns and operates three consumer packaged goods companies in Austin.
Ages 6 - 9: Level II, St. Hilda’s Room
Catechist: Jesse Klatt, jesseklatt@gmail.com
Jesse has been listening to God with children in atria in Austin for five years. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd allows her to connect contemplative prayer life with her love for children and children’s religious formation. She has three children, Ogden, 9, Amity, 7, and Lillian, 3, who she teaches at home and outdoors all over Austin.
Age 9 +: Level III, St. Joseph’s Room
The Rev. Kelly Jennings has been a CGS catechist since 2013. She grew up in Oklahoma City, attended the Univ. of Kansas, and then Yale Divinity School for her M.Div. which led to ordination to the priesthood in 2004. She has two children, ages 10 and 11. She is currently Dir. of Family Ministries at Resurrection.
What is Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS)?
CGS is Christian spiritual formation for children aged 3-12 based on Scripture and Liturgy. It is chiefly a place of prayer.
What is the Atrium?
The atrium is a community in which children and adults live together a religious experience which facilitates participation in the wider community of the family, the church and other social spheres.
Who came up with CGS?
Sofia Cavalletti, a Hebrew and Scripture scholar, and Gianna Gobbi, an educator and collaborator with Maria Montessori, initiated this method of Catechesis in the 1950’s. Often called a living work, CGS is the product of the careful observation of children for over 60 years.
What do they learn?
The question might well be: Whom do they get to know? Principally, over the course of their time in the Atrium, from age 3 to 12, the child grows to know deeply the love of the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, for them; and how the Bible and our worship of God reveal this great love for them and all His creation.
With work that extends directly from scripture (Parables, Prophecies, geography of Biblical events, narratives; and in Level III, the miracles, Old Testament figures, the History of the Jewish People) and from our liturgy, the child realizes that God has always had a plan to bring all of humankind into the fullness of His Kingdom. The child becomes gradually aware that they, too, have a role in this great Plan.
How can I get involved?
